The $0 to $1 Validation Checklist
7 questions every founder must answer before writing a single line of code — or wasting $40,000 finding out the hard way.
The 7 Questions
Question 1
The Pain Test
I have personally experienced the problem this app solves — or spoken to 10+ people who have.
Ideas born from real pain survive. Ideas born from "wouldn't it be cool if..." don't. You need skin in the game or direct access to the people who do.
📊
83% of successful apps solved a problem the founder personally had.
Question 2
The Wallet Test
At least 5 people have told me they would pay for this — with a specific dollar amount.
"I would definitely use that" costs nothing to say. "I'll pay $9.99/month for that" is real signal. Until someone names a price, you don't have validation — you have encouragement.
💸
Enthusiasm is free. Price sensitivity reveals true demand.
Question 3
The Google Test
I've searched for solutions and found expensive/bad existing options — or nothing, and confirmed people ARE searching for it.
No competition can mean two things: blue ocean opportunity, or no market. The difference? Search volume. Use Google Trends or Keyword Planner to confirm people are actively looking.
🔍
If they're not searching, they're not hurting badly enough to pay.
Question 4
The 10-Second Test
I can explain what my app does and who it's for in one sentence — and a stranger immediately says "oh I know someone who needs that."
If you need 3 sentences to explain it, your positioning is unclear. If a stranger doesn't immediately think of someone who needs it, your target audience is too broad.
🗣️
Word-of-mouth starts with a sentence. If you can't say it, they can't share it.
Question 5
The Rival Test
I have used at least 3 competitor apps for 30+ minutes each and written down exactly what frustrates me about them.
Your differentiation must be grounded in real competitor weakness — not imagined superiority. Spending 30 minutes with a competitor saves you 6 months of building the wrong thing.
⚔️
The fastest path to product-market fit is to solve what competitors do badly.
Question 6
The Build Test
I could launch a working version of this app in under 30 days using existing tools (no-code, API wrappers, or a simple MVP).
If your V1 requires 6 months of development, you're building too much. The best MVPs are embarrassingly simple. The goal is one core feature that delivers the core value — nothing else.
🚀
Speed of learning > perfection. Your first version will be wrong. Ship it fast, learn faster.
Question 7
The Numbers Test
I have done back-of-envelope math: if X% of my target market pays $Y/month, I make $Z — and Z is a number worth pursuing.
Example: 10,000 target users × 2% conversion × $9.99/mo = $1,998/mo. Is that worth 6 months of work? Do the math before writing code. Most founders skip this and discover the market is too small after building.
🔢
A good idea in a small market is a bad business.
